At Crossville, “Green” has always been our signature color.
From the start of our business in Crossville, TN, our founders recognized that a product that comes from the earth should have minimal impact on the earth. Originating from our core values of family, respect, partnership, integrity and improvement, our ongoing efforts in sustainability support the belief that the built environment should foster well-being in our lives at home, at work, and beyond.

To our value of improvement, our sustainability intentions began on day 1, but don’t stop there. Our plants were designed and remodeled to reduce the impact that manufacturing has on our natural resources. Our product development teams strive to do the same. Our core value of partnership has us working diligently with our supply chain to help them make improvements beyond the walls of our factories and service locations.

All of our efforts support four flags of sustainability that serves as Crossville’s guiding compass.

CARBON Reduction

Reducing the world’s carbon footprint is on everyone’s mind. We are actively decarbonizing our products and facilities by:
  • Maximizing efficiencies to reduce natural gas consumption
  • Optimizing our formulations and formats to lower energy impacts
  • Partnering with landlords to implement LED action-controlled lighting
  • Actively leveraging full-truckload shipments to reduce fuel waste
  • Pursuing new equipment with lower energy requirements
Consumption of natural gas and electricity is our largest carbon contributor; we are working diligently with the TVA - whose goal is to be carbon neutral themselves by 2050 - and our local natural gas supplier. As we look to launch new products, we will continue to improve our own efficiencies and equipment as well as explore the purchase of carbon offsets in order to produce some of the most energy-responsible tile in the world.

Waste Management

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. We’ve all heard it before, but making less waste, and finding innovative ways to use byproduct and second-grade materials, are at the heart of Crossville’s sustainability efforts. A few examples include:

  • Filtering and recirculating waste water through our plants to reduce water consumptions
  • Recycling all cardboard in manufacturing facilities
  • Recycling unfired and fired scrap tile back into first-grade products
  • Taking back unused scrap tile from job sites through our Tile Take-Back™ Program for recycling
  • View our list of pre-consumer recycled content by series and/or color.

In fact, we’re so good at managing the waste we – and others – create that we are a net consumer of waste. That means we use more waste than we actively produce. Over the years through a partnership with TOTO, we have crushed their second-grade sanitary fixtures from TOTO’s Morrow, GA plant and we continue to incorporate them into brand new tile.

Sustainability Certifications

Green Squared®

Green Squared® is the tile industry’s standard for sustainability. Green Squared® involves one industry, one standard, and one mark and covers the gamut of products used in a tile installation. As the first multi-attribute sustainability standard developed for tiles and tile installation materials, Green Squared® uses the transparency and consensus of the ANSI process combined with third party certification to evaluate, validate, and communicate products which have a positive impact on the environment and society.

Green Squared® covers product characteristics, manufacturing, end of product life management, progressive corporate governance, and innovation in an effort to establish sustainability criteria for products throughout their full lifecycle.

Crossville is proud to say were an early adopter to this standard, and that all of our Tennessee manufactured products are Green Squared® certified by SCS Laboratories.
