Tile Finishes & Coatings

The finished look and texture of a ceramic or porcelain tile is determined, in part, by its finish or coating. Learn about various tile coatings.
Porcelain tile finishes

Different tile finish textures will affect a tile’s recommended application, benefits and advantages, and overall look and feel. Crossville has developed a portfolio of distinctive and proprietary finish offerings to add beauty and function to residential and commercial designs, both indoors and out.

A634 CrossSlate

Cross-Slate® (CS)

The Cross-Slate® finish combines the rustic and textured feel of slate with the through-body color and durability of Porcelain Stone®. Through-body color, unglazed structured surface, and a variety of sizes provide value where enhanced traction is needed for high traffic interior and exterior spaces. Cross-Slate is recommended for interior floors and walls, as well as exterior walls and exterior walking surfaces in both residential and commercial environments. Available in select sizes of Cross-Colors®.

Cross-Tread® (CTS)

Increased slip resistance and ease of maintenance make this tile a suitable choice for wet and greasy floor areas, as well as for exterior walking surfaces. The Cross-Tread® surface pattern is eye-catching, making it a great option for transitional areas and for use as an accent tile. Available in select sizes of Cross-Colors®.

Honed (HON)

Honed tile is tile that has had the surface mechanically altered to a uniform, semi-polished finish. The honed (semi-polished) field tile is used for dry interior floors, walls, countertops, and exterior walls in both residential and commercial applications. Honed tile is not recommended for wet areas. Available for Argent, Bluestone, Moonstruck, Notorious, and Shades 2.0 by Crossville® Porcelain Stone collections.

A890 Polished

Polished (PO)

Polished Porcelain Stone® is an attractive and practical alternative to natural stone. Polished finishes are recommended for most interior floors and walls and exterior walls, including areas where a look of elegance and sophistication is desired. Polished finish is not recommended for wet areas where standing water may occur. Polished finishes are not recommended for exterior horizontal surfaces. Available in our Cross-Colors® and Empire collections.

Satin (SAT)

Tile that has had the surface mechanically altered to produce a smooth, semi-matte finish. The satin finish is recommended for residential and light commercial use only. State of Grace is not recommended for exterior horizontal surfaces or exterior paving. The satin finish is not recommended for wet areas where standing water may occur. Available in State of Grace Porcelain Stone®.

Unpolished (UPS)

Cross-Colors® unpolished (UPS) with the Cross-Sheen® finish imparts a subtle glow that enhances the color of the tile and also allows stains and scuff marks to be easily wiped off the surface. Cross-Colors unpolished is appropriate for most interior floors and walls and exterior walls, including high-traffic areas and areas where a low level of maintenance is desired. Cross-Colors unpolished is not recommended for exterior horizontal surfaces. Available in select sizes of Cross-Colors®.

Exterior (EXT)

A textured finish designed for exterior walking surfaces in residential and commercial environments where enhanced traction is desired. Exterior products are also suitable for interior paving, especially in wet areas.
Cross-Sheen Logo

Cross-Sheen® (UPS)

Cross-Sheen® is an integrated finish that protects the look of Crossville tile from the effects of scuffs, stains, permanent marker, and even graffiti. By creating an advanced, easier-to-clean tile surface, Cross-Sheen allows for fast removal of unsightly marks using only mild cleaner, resulting in hassle-free cleaning and long-term performance of your Crossville tile.

Unlike expensively applied, non-permanent anti-graffiti coatings, Cross-Sheen is incorporated directly into the surface of the tile, so it will never scrape off or wear off. Made in the USA to stringent specifications, Cross-Sheen is a beautifully advanced solution for exterior and interior walls and interior flooring in residential or commercial applications.

Hydrotect Logo

Hydrotect™ by Crossville

Hydrotect™ by Crossville, a revolutionary, invisible coating that harnesses the power of light, water, and oxygen to create the best defense against dirt and pollution. Whether indoors or out, floors and walls stay cleaner, providing a superior experience in any space.

Crossville’s proprietary process uses a hybrid photocatalyst coating containing nontoxic titanium dioxide. Applied in a secondary, high-temperature firing process, it stays on the surface and doesn’t wash or wear off.

Tiles coated with Hydrotect attract water, rather than allowing it to bead and sit on the surface. In exterior applications, attracted rainwater forms a barrier beneath dirt and grime, naturally washing it away. Everyday exterior humidity also causes a fine film of water to build on the tile, preventing the adhesion of dust and oily dirt. Hydrotect-coated surfaces require less, and less costly, maintenance that’s easier on the environment, too.

When exterior walls coated with Hydrotect are exposed to light, the photocatalytic process breaks down harmful nitrogen oxides—greenhouse gases produced by exhaust fumes, smoke, VOCs, and other environmental pollutants—into harmless nitrates. In fact, a 10,000-square-foot area of tiles can clean the air as effectively as 70 deciduous trees or green space the size of four tennis courts.
